Recessed lighting is the most requested lighting upgrade we install. Done well, it makes a room feel bigger and brighter. Done badly, it looks like an airport runway.
Spacing
A reliable starting rule is to space lights about half the ceiling height apart: roughly four feet for an eight-foot ceiling. Keep the first row about two to three feet off the wall to avoid harsh shadows. Kitchens need lights over the counter edge, not behind where you stand.
Color temperature
- 2700K is warm and suits living rooms and bedrooms
- 3000K is slightly crisper and popular for kitchens and baths
- 4000K and above is cool and best for garages, shops and offices
Keep one color temperature per room. Mixed tones are the most common complaint we are called to fix.
Dimmers
Almost all LED fixtures can dim, but only with a compatible dimmer. A mismatch causes flicker, buzzing or lights that never fully turn off. See dimmer switch installation.
No attic? No problem
Slim canless LED fixtures are only about an inch thick and fit between floors or under shallow joists. Cable is fished from hole to hole with little or no drywall patching.
Beyond cans
Layer the lighting: under-cabinet strips for tasks, pendants over an island, and outdoor lighting for steps, entries and driveways. A ceiling fan with a light can anchor a bedroom or great room, and smart controls tie it all into scenes.
LED retrofits for businesses
Offices, shops and warehouses still running fluorescent tubes or metal halide high-bays can cut lighting energy sharply with LED fixtures and occupancy sensors. Our commercial electricians and warehouse electricians handle lighting retrofits with minimal disruption.
